video:playback

controls: video playback

Video controls for playback fall into two categories: starting and stopping the current video, and playing a different media file.

The latter category involves the automatically-generated playlist.

Video Playback

Control Action
[Spacebar] pause or resume playback
[S] re[S]tart the current video (or [S]tart over, if you prefer)1)
[F8] jump to the previous chapter if there is one2)
[F9] jump to the next chapter if there is one2)
[right mouse click] pause or resume playback

If playback is more than a few seconds3) into a chapter, hitting [F8] will actually jump to the beginning of the current chapter. If playback is within the first few seconds3) of the chapter, [F8] will jump to the previous chapter.

You can alter the default 5-second threshold by editing the mpv.conf file and adding
–chapter-seek-threshold=
followed by the required number of seconds. If the value is negative, [F8] will always jump to the previous chapter, regardless of the current playback position.

1)
if the editing timeline is open, [S] operates differently
2)
not all video files have chapters - you can find out if a video file has chapters by briefly going into the video editor (Ctrl [E]) - if the media file has chapters, they will be automatically imported into the timeline
3)
default is 5 seconds
