Lanching MMP: Minimalist Media Player

There are a number of ways of launching MMP.

Download MMP

First, you will need to download the latest version (see Download) and unzip the contents of the zip file to any folder, e.g. C:\MMP\ - there is no setup program to run as MMP is 100% portable.

Launching MMP

Method 1 - Try out MMP

The easiest way to try out MMP is to right-click a video file and select Open With from the context menu. You will get a list of installed apps, a bit like this:
mmpopenwith.jpg

On your system MMP: Minimalist Media Player won't currently be listed, so click on Choose Default Program…:

Select Choose an app on your PC, browse to the folder you unzipped all the MMP files to and select MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe

Windows will add MMP: Minimalist Media Player to your selection list:

You may now either select Always or Just Once. If you select Always and later change your mind, it's very easy to select another media player as your default.

Whichever button you select, MMP will now play your video.

When MMP opens, try pressing Ctrl [H] to display the help panel showing all the controls you can play with.

Method 2 - Run MMP directly

An alternative approach is to simply run the MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe by double-clicking on it in your File Explorer. The following message will be displayed:

Basically, it's telling you that you should really have used Method 1 or Method 3 ;-)

When you click OK a black MMP window will be displayed:

You can drag and drop any media file from your File Explorer onto this window and MMP will play the file.

Personally, this is my least favorite way of launching MMP but you may choose it if you wish.

Method 3 - Set MMP as your default Media Player

There are two ways to set MMP as your default media player.

The first is repeat the selection process shown in Method 1 for every file extension you want MMP to play when you double-click a file with that extension in your File Explorer.
In this case, for every such file extension, you would click Always in the following Windows dialog:

However, MMP supports many different file extensions of audio, video and image formats - around 150 at the last count.

The 'install' folder

There is an automated process for registering MMP as a media player with Windows and for associating MMP with all the file extensions it supports:

Find the folder containing MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe - in this folder is a sub-folder called install.

Contained in the install folder is a Windows batch file called mmp-install.bat.

You can simply double-click this batch to automatically perform the file extension associations1).

Now, when you click [practically] any video or audio file on your PC, MMP will play it2).

Currently, the image file formats are commented out in the batch file, so they are not associated with MMP as standard3).
Look for the line :: uncomment the following lines to manually include image formats
If you wish to also open image files with MMP by default, simply uncomment the few lines that follow by removing the double colons ::
mmp-install.bat can be run and re-run any number of times.

1)
You can disassociate MMP with all the file extensions at any time by double-clicking the mmp-uninstall.bat file
2)
A future version of MMP will implement file associations via a user options panel within the program
3)
although they are on my system!
