What you need to do

In the minimalistmediaplayer.conf file, set…

Setting Effect
[autoUpdate=yes] opening the About Box with Ctrl [A] will check for updates

Latest Release

MMP will check what the latest release version is and compare it with the version you are currently running.

The ability to check online is dependent on two files being in your MMP folder: libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll. Without these files, MMP is unable to make a secure connection to the internet1).

If you are not running the latest version, MMP will download the Release Notes, any images contained in the release notes, and the latest “MinimalistMediaPlayer_vX_Y_Z.full.zip” file containing the latest release.

MMP will unzip the new versions of 'MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe' and rename the currently-running version. The next time you launch MMP it will be the latest version and nothing more will be downloaded until a new version is released, no matter how often you open the About Box.

This is also the only time that MMP will ever connect to the internet

Disk Space

An entire release requires ~537MB of disk space and is contained in an “MinimalistMediaPlayer_vX_Y_Z.full.zip” file which is ~205MB, making a total of ~742MB to download the .zip file and unzip it.

Unless you are very short of disk space, you are recommended to keep the Release Notes and images (in the '\releaseNotes' subfolder) and at least the most recent “MinimalistMediaPlayer_vX_Y_Z.full.zip” file.
Having said that, once you are running the latest version, MMP will never redownload the .zip file.

What's New?

You can read the Release Notes by clicking on the What's New? button in the About Box1)

This window can be resized to better accommodate the contents of the Release Notes.
All images will be displayed, and any links contained in the text can be clicked and will open in your default browser.

Other Files in the Zip Archive

There are other 64-bit binary files contained in the zip file, alongside the MinimalistMediaPlayer.exe executable. The release notes for each release will tell you the version and date of release of each file.

For example:

libmpv-2.dll (MPV v0.40.0) v2.0.0 2025/12/15
MediaInfo.dll v25.10 2025/11/05
ffmpeg.exe v8.0.1 2025/11/20
ffprobe.exe v8.0.1 2025/11/20
libeay32.dll v1.0.2.15 2024/02/17
ssleay32.dll v1.0.2.15 2024/02/17

The fundamental operations of these files do not change significantly from release to release.
Even so, MMP will not update these files automatically, so as not to [potentially] break your working MMP environment.
If you decide to unzip and use the latest versions of these files, you are recommended to keep the old versions as backups while you try out the new versions.

libmpv-2.dll MPV as a library
MediaInfo.dll extracts metadata from each media file (duration, dimensions, chapters, etc)
ffmpeg.exe used by the Audio & Video Timeline Editor to create the edited audio or video file
ffprobe.exe used by the Audio & Video Timeline Editor to extract keyframe information from a video file
libeay32.dll used to provide a secure connection to the internet
ssleay32.dll used to provide a secure connection to the internet
1)
It's possible that other software will have installed these files on your system.
